Confused with what your Interior Designer is describing? Well, here are 21 Interior Design Terms with their definitions that will help you communicate with you're designers, vendors, etc more efficiently.

1. Backsplash: A panel behind a sink or cooker that protects the wall from splashes; usually a tiled surface.

2. Bespoke: Bespoke design is fundamentally about creating a product that is precise to a client's brief or specification & unique to him/her.

3. Blinds: A screen for a window, especially one on a roller or made of slats.

4. Chandelier: A large, decorative hanging light with branches for several light bulbs or candles. Usually used for double height spaces.

5. Console: A type of side table placed against a wall and normally fixed to it, requiring legs or other decorative support only at the front.

6. Countertop: A flat surface for working on, especially in a kitchen; a worktop.

7. Emphasis: The process of creating focus within a designated space.

8. Inlay: A design or pattern which is made by putting different materials onto the surface of an object.

9. Louver: Each of a set of angled slats fixed or hung at regular intervals in a door, shutter, or screen to allow air or light to pass through.

10. Modular: Designs made with standardized units that can be fit together in a variety of ways. Generally, Easy to assemble & install.

11. Mood Board: An arrangement of different materials, textures, colors etc. intended to evoke or project a particular style or concept.

12. Niche: A decorative recess set into a wall for the purpose of displaying a statue, vase, or other object.

13. Ottoman: A low upholstered seat without a back or arms that typically serves also as a box, with the seat hinged to form a lid.

14. Transparent & Opaque: Transparent surfaces allow light to pass through so that objects behind can be distinctly seen. Opaque surfaces are not capable of having light pass through.

15. Tapestry: A piece of thick textile fabric with pictures or designs formed by weaving coloured weft threads or by embroidering on canvas, used as a wall hanging or soft furnishing.

16. Quilt: A warm bed covering made of padding enclosed between layers of fabric and kept in place by lines of stitching, typically applied in a decorative design.

17. Skirting: A border, especially of wood or tiles, fixed round the base of an interior wall to protect it from kicks, & dirt.

18. Sill: A shelf or slab of stone, wood, or metal at the foot of a window opening or doorway.

19. Upholstery: Materials (such as fabric, padding, and springs) used to make a soft covering especially for a seat.

20. Vanity: A combination of the bathroom sink & the storage that surrounds it. Cabinetry that is designed to hold the sink and conceal the associated plumbing as well as providing much needed storage.

21. Vintage: Old or dated from an earlier period of time.
